The first phase of the Dukan Diet is referred to as the attack phase and it lasts between three to ten days, depending on the amount of weight you need to lose. It is based on eating only proteins with a few non-fat dairy products. How does such a restrictive diet work and how does it affect your weight in the long term?
The Dukan Diet is a four-phase diet plan that was devised by Dr Pierre Dukan. The first phase is known as the attack phase and during this stage, the dieter can eat as much as they like from a list of 72 foods. These are made up of:
- Pure proteins such as beef, chicken, turkey and veal.
- Fish and seafood.
- Non-fat dairy products.
How long should diet last?
The length of the attack phase depends on how much weight the dieter needs to lose. If they need to lose under 20lbs, they stay on the attack phase for three days. For up to 40lbs, they remain on the diet for five days and if they need to lose anything more than 40lbs, they stay on the diet for ten days.
Dr Dukan has proved that eating a protein only diet shocks the body into losing weight. He has worked as a nutritionist for over thirty years and devised the diet to help those who are seriously overweight. Restricting food intake to low-fat proteins shakes up the body and sets it up for the next phase of the diet where vegetables are introduced.
Why our body needs proteins?
Proteins are needed to help the body maintain its vital organs. When you restrict your food intake to only eating proteins, the body limits itself to only absorbing the proteins it needs to function and gets rid of the food it does not require.
Eating proteins burn up more calories than eating other types of food. For example, if you eat 100 calories of sugar, the body will only burn seven calories and then absorb the remaining 93 calories. If you eat the same amount of protein, the body burns 30 calories assimilating the food, leaving only 70 calories to be absorbed. Proteins can also reduce your appetite by making you feel fuller for longer and they also absorb water. By getting rid of excess water in the body, you immediately lose weight.
Finally, eating pure proteins can boost your system’s resistance to bugs, viruses and infections. When you start a diet, you immediately weaken the body so that it is more susceptible to infection. By eating a diet rich in proteins, you counter-act this effect.
The Dukan Diet is the result of thirty years of experience. There are thousands of people who have tried and succeeded on the Dukan Diet. Whilst, the attack phase may seem restrictive in terms of what you can and cannot eat, it does provide your body with the shock it needs to lose weight over the longer term and to keep it off permanently.
